THE KIEV WHITE ROCK SHELTER IN UKRAINE

The White Rock Shelter is close to the Kyiv International Airport and the main highway. From the first moments of the Russian occupation and bombing. it has been hard hit. The shelter administration has invested in significant reserves of food, drinking water, medicine, and fuel, reserves that have run out over the months.

The animals housed in the shelter have been evacuated several times and during these evacuations they have suffered a great deal, experiencing many medium to severe problems and needing constant medication.

Since February 2023, we have approved a special fund for:

• the maintenance and care of the animals taken in (4 bears and an arctic wolf);
• the purchase of a mobile building that will allow the caretakers to guard the centre and monitor the bears, but also to store stocks of food, drinking water and medicine.

This funding is part of a relief plan initiated by LAV since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, for the benefit of animals and people affected by the war that began on 24 February 2022 and is still ongoing.

COUNTERS AGAINST ANIMAL ABUSE

In order to fight and stop violence against animals, we decided to strengthen and intensify our intervention activity against animal abuse. with the creation of 10 territorial desks.
The LAV Counters Against Animal Abuse are services for the prevention and repression of crimes against animals. They also carry out information and education activities for a correct coexistence with animals.

We opened the first two Counters in January 2023, thanks to our major donors,  in Verona and Trento.

CILAVEGNA: FROM LEGAL COMMITMENT TO ANIMAL ADVOCACY

A true story. An unauthorised farm where more than 100 defenceless, malnourished animals were imprisoned, without water, without food and with mange. A spot where the clandestine slaughter was still practised. In July 2022, we managed to rescue 116 animals from that atrocious place, of which 61 piglets were given to us in judicial custody. This rescue was only possible thanks to a long action that began in November 2021. It saw the joint intervention of the Cremona NAS with the Carabinieri Forestali, the Pavia ATS, and the Local Police, which led to the discovery of the case and the complaint filed by our Legal Department. As a result of this operation, we obtained:
- the preventive seizure of the farm and the animals kept there;
- the entry of staff and our volunteers to care for and feed the animals.

All the animals, assigned to LAV after the seizure, live supported by a special fund raised also thanks to our Major Donors, in a shelter, where they can enjoy spaces suited to their needs and where they are cared for and fed according to their health requirements.

The rescue of the mouflons on the island of Giglio and their new life.

On the island of Giglio, within the Tuscan Archipelago National Park in the 1950s, mouflons were reintroduced for hunting purposes.  The island of Giglio is the site of the LIFE LetsgoGiglio Project, which provides for measures to protect biodiversity, including the removal of mouflons from the island.

The intervention, planned through culling by hunters, has raised protests from associations and citizens. In November 2021, LAV helped to stop this massacre with an agreement that provided for the transfer of the mouflons to facilities indicated by us, thus guaranteeing them an adequate life suited to their needs.

The mouflon is a huntable animal throughout Italy, except in Sardinia, and for this reason, safe places and shelters have been selected.
