Nestled in the hills and woods of the Tuscan Maremma, the Centre is home to more than 100 animals rescued from farms, circuses, illegal trafficking, and vivisection.
The idea of welcoming many types of animals in an Animal Recovery Centre gives a concrete answer to a problem. In the absence of spaces in existing Recovery Centres and specialized Centres to receive them promptly, when an abused animal is seized, it often stays in its tormentor’s hands.
This is why, at the Animanatura Wild Sanctuary we welcome animals who are victims of abuse to give them a new life, far from all forms of exploitation.
The Centre hosts many animals rescued from circuses: such as Madiba, a lion, Perù, a llama; Asia, a dromedary; Arturo, a zebra; Karim, a horse, and many others. Before, they lived in cramped spaces, were forced to undergo long journeys, and then had to perform before the paying public. Today, that life is a distant memory and they can finally enjoy the freedom of large, green spaces.
Madiba, shown in the picture, is a lion rescued from the circus. Now he lives with Elsa, also saved from a circus, in a large green area dedicated to them.
The Animanatura Wild Sanctuary offers to his guests
Above all, the environment fully respects the rescued animals’ ethological characteristics.
Among the Centre's residents, there are also two colonies of macaques rescued from the vivisection.
Occhiolino, Alfa, Buddha, and all the others, in the cold laboratory cages where they were forced to live, could neither see sunlight nor hear the sound of rain.
Now, in two large and equipped areas built for them, they spend their days playing, climbing, and socializing with each other, just as they would in the wild.
Alfa and Buddha, shown in the picture, come from the same laboratory but lived in different cages. Since they were reunited, they have never been apart!
Thanks to the generosity of a member, with his legacy to LAV, we purchased another 23 hectares of land adjacent to the existing Centre. There, we created new areas currently dedicated to herbivorous animals.
Our supporters’ generosity allows us to guarantee constant care for the rescued animals and give a new life in freedom to all those we will save in the future.+
Centre guests include Jerry, a bull; Nutella, a cow; but also pigs and dozens of cattle, goats, and sheep. These animals’ life of exploitation and certain death is now only bad memory.
All of them represent a beacon of hope for millions of livestock raised in Italy for food purposes. They are a symbol for habit changes, especially food habits, that we propose against all forms of exploitation.
Nutella, the cow in the picture, was seized from an abusive farm. Now, the worst is over, and she is free to graze in the countryside along with many other cows!
All our animal shelter areas were created according to the highest international standards, and developed through a network of organisations already engaged in the sector, such as the Born Free Foundation, Four Paws, the AAP Foundation, and other entities active for decades in the field of Animal Sanctuaries and Recovery Centres.
Thanks to the collaboration with the Dutch association AAP , we developed the #BORNTOBEWILD project, created to combat the illegal trafficking of barbary macaques.
Rocket, Lucy, Buddy and Calogero, after a life of loneliness, have finally discovered what it means to have a family. The behavioural problems they experienced due to life in isolation drastically decreased in a short time thanks to socialization with their peers and the constant care they received!
Buddy, shown in the picture, is one of the barbary macaques we saved from illegal trafficking thanks to the #BornToBeWild project
