Gorgona: The Island of Rights

On the prison island of Gorgona, hundreds of animals were raised and slaughtered every year, including calves, pigs, rabbits, chickens, sheep, horses and goats. This is no longer happening. Gorgona is becoming what we have always hoped for: the island of rights for everyone, including animals.

Our Battle

Gorgona, in the Tuscan Archipelago, is the last Italian prison island. Since the end of the 19th century, it has housed not only inmates, but also animals. Then, for more than twenty years, new forms of relationship between prisoners and animals were experimented with on Gorgona island.

That lasted until 2015, when animal slaughter resumed. After years of battles, petitions and demonstrations, thanks to Under-secretary of Justice Ferraresi and the Memorandum of Understanding that we signed in January 2020 and then renewed in November 2022 with Gorgona prison, our dream is becoming a reality: all 588 animals on the island are safe and no longer destined for production and slaughter.

A new home for animals

When the prison slaughterhouse was closed and dismantled, to avoid animal overcrowding on the island, we started sterilizations and the transfer of animals to shelters and sanctuaries.

We will also keep some of the animals and take them to the Animanatura Wild Sanctuary in Semproniano [GR]. Since 2020, thanks to our patrons, we have also been contributing to the maintenance and care of animals on the island.

The "former livestock" animals on the island are the protagonists of stories and educational and assisted activities that we fund.

Support the Dream of Freedom

LAV will continue to cover the maintenance costs of the 138 animals that will remain on the island and the transport of the remaining 450 to shelters and sanctuaries.

We have already moved 85 animals thanks to patrons’ donations. For the dream to continue, we need everyone's help. Yours too.

With €33, you can help us take care of a pig for a week; €52 will provide food to a sheep for two weeks, and €105 will provide food and care to a cow for a week. Be part of the realization of this great dream of freedom!

SUPPORT US

On the prison island of Gorgona, hundreds of animals were raised and slaughtered every year, including calves, pigs, rabbits, chickens, sheep, horses and goats. This is no longer happening. We managed to save them all, also thanks to the support of other fighters with a dream like ours. Gorgona is finally becoming what we have always hoped for: the island of rights for everyone, including animals.
